Perhaps you suspect that dieting doesn't work. You have worked hard with it, maybe for years.
But why is it so difficult?
Dieting doesn't work because:
- It is a conscious way of controlling food that demands a lot of focus. Ultimately, it fails because the mental energy of counting and monitoring can't be sustained.
- Most of our eating behaviour has been established through a lifetime and is unconscious and automatic. Dieting won't overwrite these underlying drivers.
- The body has many ways to ensure that we do not starve. Dieting activates these survival mechanisms making it increasingly hard to undereat while increasing cravings and binges.
- The dieting approach works against the way the brain functions. For example, when we try not to think about food we end up thinking about it (and eating) more.
- Eating involves a gamut of chemical body processes involving hormones and brain chemicals. Dieting can make them imbalanced and even chaotic.
What you need to do instead is:
- Call a diet amnesty and start a natural method of eating, based on mindfulness and intuitive body wisdom. This will support your journey to your happy and healthy weight.
- Understand your eating, identify overeating triggers and learn methods to manage your eating and make binges and emotional eating a thing of the past.
- Eat the right balance of nutrients to eliminate cravings. This also prevents the metabolic rate lowering abnormally - diets can reduce it by as much as 40 per cent!
- Support the brain by using positive thinking and attitudes which support the changes you want to make in your eating, activity and lifestyle. This is called health psychology.
- Support the brain and body processes through the balanced approach to nutrition. No clean eating or weird gimmicks required and no need to cut out your favourites.
