Why You Should Visit your Doctor

Keeping in touch with your GP can add years to your life

Since the pandemic, many people have lost regular contact with their doctors, and with GP surgeries now facing long wait times and phone queues, it’s easy to let appointments slide. But as someone invested in health, I’m concerned about this trend, especially for those in later middle age or dealing with chronic conditions.

I often hear people say, “I never go to the doctor,” as if it’s a badge of honour, but skipping regular check-ups can have serious consequences. Doctors can offer critical screenings and tests, including simple blood tests that highlight early signs of deficiencies, like low vitamin D, or even detect conditions like hypertension or high cholesterol, which are often silent killers. These tests can give us early warnings, allowing us to make necessary changes or undergo further tests to safeguard our health.

In fact, research shows that maintaining continuity of care with a GP can reduce the risk of mortality and serious illness by around 20 percent. This is especially important for managing chronic conditions and catching early signs of disease before they become severe. Staying in touch with your doctor ensures you receive timely treatments and necessary adjustments, which might be missed without regular visits.

Continuity of care is not just about convenience; it’s a key factor in improving health outcomes. So, even if it feels like a hassle sometimes, don’t give up on staying connected with your GP. Regular check-ups, even when you feel fine, can make a massive difference in your long-term health and longevity.

If you haven’t seen your doctor for a while, give them a call. And if you’re hesitant because you're struggling with medications that cause unwanted side effects, talk to them.

After that, come and see me. Together, we can address what's going on using natural nutritional approaches and, where helpful, well-considered hypnotherapy or mindfulness. It’s entirely possible to lower cholesterol, reduce blood pressure, manage diabetic medications and blood sugar levels, and even heal IBS and other common issues — many of which become more prevalent as we age.
