Mastering mindfulness

Your guide to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Welcome to the wonderful world of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy!

ACT is more than just a behaviour therapy — it's a life approach that can enhance your self-compassion and psychological flexibility and thus support you in living your most fulfilling life.

It is a lovely, gentle therapy and I like to introduce all my clients to the idea inherent.

Research consistently shows that ACT is effective across various mental health concerns, from anxiety and depression to chronic pain and eating disorders.

ACT can be beneficial in various areas of life, including:

Eating problems

ACT can be highly effective in treating eating disorders and binge eating by helping individuals recognise sensations and feelings related to food and thus providing opportunity for alternative responses.

Mental Health

ACT is effective in treating anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions. It teaches people how to manage distressing thoughts and emotions, which helps them to be more adaptable and resilient (what is known as psychological flexibility).

Performance and Achievement

ACT techniques, such as mindfulness and values elicitation, can enhance performance in all domains of life such as sport, study and creativity. It is great for actors, musicians and singers!

Chronic Pain

ACT techniques can reduce the effect of chronic pain. It has been found to be effective in pregnancy and childbirth. I use it with hypnosis and EFT for hypnobirthing.

Relationships

ACT can enhance relationships through effective communication, acceptance of each other’s thoughts and feelings, and alignment with relationship values.

Health and Lifestyle

ACT can support individuals in making sustainable lifestyle changes, such as improving diet and exercise habits and managing stress. It is great for building self-esteem and an inner support system.

In essence, ACT is a versatile approach that can be applied across various areas of life to promote mental health, increased fulfilment and personal growth.

At the heart of ACT is the idea of clarifying what is important to you and taking action to live “self-actualised”. This means living authentically and purposefully and coping with challenges as part of your journey. Through mindfulness practices and other techniques, you can develop the skills to navigate life's ups and downs with resilience and grace.

What if you do it?

Taking the step to begin therapy can be life-changing. You might start noticing shifts in how you feel day to day — less overwhelmed, more in tune with your emotions and better equipped to handle challenges. Therapy can help you have peace of mind, feel strong and confident, enjoy harmonious relationships and a greater connection to yourself and others. The changes may be profound — sometimes life-saving and life-changing.

Ready to begin?

If you're struggling with an issue, it's important to seek advice from someone who truly understands your challenges. If my approach resonates with you, I invite you to start with a Healing Blueprint session. This session gives you an opportunity to see how you feel about working with me over the longer term.

We start by assessing your problem, solutions and desired outcomes. Together, we’ll create a personalised plan that supports you as you go forward. It can save you years of frustration and set you on the path to recovery and freedom faster. It is going to give you potentially life-changing insights and a start to your healing change work.

Before our first meeting, you’ll complete a thorough questionnaire covering your desired outcomes, health history, medications, supplements and lifestyle. This helps shape our initial discussion and forms the foundation for your personal plan. During our initial consultation we’ll review this information and create a tailored plan for your goals.

If you’re ready to take that first step, I’m here to help. Start with a Healing Roadmap assessment.

Clinic locations

I currently serve clients face-to-face in Sussex and Kent, including Hastings, St Leonards on Sea, Bexhill-on-Sea, Eastbourne, Brighton, Rye, Robertsbridge, Battle and surrounding area.

Face to face sessions are always best because the personal connection builds a deeper sense of privacy, trust and safety. This can be particularly important when addressing sensitive issues. In-person sessions also provide a more reliable setting with fewer technical disruptions.

Therapy online

Based in the UK, I also have some global clients. Some local people also like this option sometimes when it isn’t possible to meet in person. I may agree to work online after we have discussed this to assess whether it is a safe and effective way of working with your particular issues.
